How to add Your Own / Custom Favicon to Your Blogger Blog ?

Favicon (pronounced fav-eye-con) is short for 'Favorites Icon.' A Favicon is a multi-resolution image included on nearly all professional developed sites. Within Internet Explorer the Favicon is displayed on the Address line and in the Favorites menu and can be clearly seen in Firefox bookmark. The Favicon allows the webmaster to further promote their site, and to create a more customized appearance within a visitor's browser. Very often, the Favicon reflects the look and feel of the blog or a representation of a company logo.

Actually there are a lot of resources online showing how to add Favicon but I thought of sharing my own method specifically for Blogger blogs which I used to set it up for mine.

To start off, you will need a graphic editing software such as Adobe Photoshop but if you don't, then download these wonderful free editors from Download.com:

If you do happen to have Photoshop, you might need to install the ICO Format Plugin which can be found here at Telegraphics.com.

If in the case you do not have a graphic editor or would prefer a very basic and simple way to make a Favicon, then visit DeGraeve.com for an online Favicon creator and editor.

Creating Your Favicon
The basic size to use is 16 x 16 pixel which is quite small to incorporate any creative ideas into it. Best way is to start with a larger square canvas to design and edit from before changing it it the required size. When you're done, make sure to save it in '.ico' format. If you are short of ideas, you can always browse through thousands of free favicons provided by Favicons R Us which you can edit it to your own taste as well.

Installing Your Favicon
Register a free account with Google Page Creator and upload your newly made Favicon as can be seen on the left image.

Then go login to your Blogger account, click on Edit Html in the Template tab and add in the following codes right after the code:

Then save your template and view your blog. Usually it does not appear the very first time so just refresh it once and it should appear. Be creative and have fun!

What are Meta Tags and how it can be used?

If you are a newbies to HTML or making websites for Adsense, it is normal that you may not know what a meta tag is. Even if you are an intermediate Web pager you may not understand fully what they are, what they mean, and what they can do for you. Therefore, I would like to write a short post in response to that.

In short, Meta Tags help search engines to index your site in a better way and hence visitors are more likely to find you and increase the traffic of your site. If you don't have meta tags in your Web pages then a lot of search engines will not even see your Web site and no one will come. They are one of the most essential parts of your webpage, if you want more people to come to it. Therefore, it is a very field in doing SEO to improve the ranking of your site.

Here is an example of what a normal meta tags should look like. Bear in mind that it should be inside the HEAD section.

Of course you may want to use more keywords than just 3 but you get the idea.

There are many things you should think about when coming up with your keywords. Ask yourself "if I was at a search engine and looking for a Web page on this topic what would I type into it to find this page". You may also want to use keywords that show up somewhere on the page at least once. Some search engines will also look at some of the words on the page itself and if they see the same word in the body of the page and in the keywords then your placement in the search results will be higher. One thing you should never do is type the same word twice in your keywords. Some search engines will get confused and not look any further to see the rest of your keywords and your page could get missed.

One trick that sometimes works is by using misspelled words in your keywords. For instance, if someone was looking for your sewing site do you think that they may type into the search engine "seuing" by accident. If this is something you have done or if it seems to be a common way of misspelling the word then you may want to add it to your keywords. This way if someone does misspell the word into the search engine you could be on the top of their search results. On the other hand, some search engines will penalize you for using a word in your meta keywords that you don't use on your page so use misspellings with caution.

Another important part of meta tags is not really a meta tag but is still very important to your search engine placement. It's the title tag and it's one of your basic HTML tags. It makes words show up on the top of the browser but it also tells people what your site is about. In your title tag you should use a short phrase that describes your page and uses keywords. You should not use puncuation except for a dash in your title tag.

Why Ads are in Wrong Language Ads ?

It seems that there are growing concern on the language problem with the Adsense code. Most likely, people reported that all their ads have been changed to Japanese or Chinese, even if they have chosen English to be the language of the site or advertisements. Even Google has noticed this problem and have a corresponding post in its blog.

First of all, if you use the HTML editor to preview the ads, the ad may change to other language. It is absolutely normal, and you do not need to worry about it. Even if you have uploaded it onto the web, the ad may initally be shown in differnet language. This is because Google's bot may take up to 48 hours to crawl your site. Before that, irrelevant ads or wrong-language ads may be shown. Again, Google has assured that this is normal.

"Before our system can display targeted ads on your pages, our crawler first needs to access your pages. While you're building your pages within your HTML editor, your page hasn't yet been crawled, so you may sometimes see less-targeted ads or even ads in foreign languages. However, after you've published a page to the web, you should start seeing ads in the appropriate language. Please also keep in mind that it can sometimes take 1 to 2 weeks for our crawler to revisit your site after you've made any changes, but your ad relevance should improve over time. As always, we appreciate your patience as the crawler continues its work."

Google has advanced technology to detect what your content is about, and deliver targeted ads to your site. This is why Google is so successful in its internet advertising industry.

Why I am getting PSA?

I have been asked many times that the Gsense ads in my site only shows PSA (Public Service Advertisement), and hence cannot earn any from Gsense. I hence decide to write a post on explaining why PSA will show. If you are getting PSA right now, try to find out the cause and then tackle them.

1) Google's crawler needs more time.

If Google has not previously crawled your site, it may take up to 48 hours or more before our crawlers gather content from that page. In the meantime, the ads you see may be public service ads or ads that are only slightly relevant. The relevance will increase over time.Note: Google's crawler indexes by URL and therefore considers http://site.com and http://www.site.com different URLs. Because Google's crawler will visit these URLs separately, you may notice ads appear differently on these pages.

2) Google's crawler can't reach your site.

If our crawler isn't able to access your page, we'll provide you with an error message on the Site Diagnostics page of your account.

3) Your page may contain sensitive content.

Google's system has certain filters in place to protect our advertisers from advertising on pages that could be construed as potentially negative, non-family safe or even offensive. Although the nature of your content may not fit into any of these categories, at times the emphasis of some sensitive subject matters on a page can flag our servers to deliver public service ads to a page.

4) Your website is using session IDs in the URL.

If your web pages use session IDs, you may not receive targeted ads on those pages. Since this session ID - and therefore the URL - changes every time a different user views a page, the URL will not be in the index and will be queued to be crawled. Once the URL is crawled, however, the session will most likely have expired. This means that pages seen by the users are never in the index. You will need to remove the session IDs in order to display targeted ads.

5) Your website is using frames.

Google AdSense crawlers are unable to match ads to your web page content when the AdSense ad code is placed in a frame separate from the primary content of your website. It is important to place the ad code in the same frame as the content of your web pages in order to serve ads targeted to your web page content.

6) Your ad unit is set to display image ads only.

Image ad inventory for your content may be limited at this time; if you've chosen not to display text ads in an ad unit, we'll show PSAs in that unit when there are no relevant image ads available. To avoid showing PSA's, we recommend updating your preferences to show both text and image ads or implementing an alternate ad.

7) Your web page may not contain enough content.

There may not be enough information on your site for our crawlers to determine the content of your pages. Therefore, we could be having difficulty identifying relevant ads to show on your pages.

8) The AdSense ad code was placed within an IFRAME.

Google's targeting technology is not optimized to serve ads within a separate IFRAME. If you placed the AdSense code in a separate IFRAME, your site may display less targeted ads or public service ads. For better results, please implement our ad code directly into the source of your web page. Once you make these changes, relevant ads may not appear immediately. Until we are able to re-crawl your site, which may take up to 48 hours or more, your page may continue to display untargeted or public service ads.

9) Your web pages are behind a login.

At this time, pages that require a login can not be easily visited by our crawlers. Additionally, since these types of pages are not easily visited for approval and it is difficult for our AdSense specialists to verify that pages behind a log in follow Google AdSense policies, we are unable to offer support for these pages.

10) There are too many URLs added to your account filter list.

At times, if you add too many URLs to your filter list, we may no longer have other ads available to target to your content. As a result, you may begin seeing less relevant or public service ads on your web pages.

11) Your site content is primarily in an unsupported language.

If the AdSense code is placed on pages with content primarily in an unsupported language, we may show public service ads or ads in another language. As noted in our program policies, publishers may not display ads on pages with content primarily in an unsupported language, so please remove the ad code from these pages until we're able to support your language.

12) Your ad code has been modified

If the AdSense code has been manually modified, such as to change the ad unit width or height or the publisher ID, then we may show public service ads. Please select the desired ad format on the AdSense Setup tab of your account and then paste the generated ad code, unedited, onto your pages. Keep in mind that modifications to your code are not permitted by our program policies.

13) Your page contains a refresh tag.

If the header of your page contains a refresh tag, this may also lead to your page displaying PSA's. Removing this tag can help ensure that you receive targeted ads.

There are some misconception on the term invalid click in Gsense. You should be familiarize with this term yet it may be cost you an Adsnese acccount, and all the money you have earned inside.

Invalid clicks does not mean those clicks on your site that has not yet uploaded on server. In fact, invalid clicks are those clicks generated by a person that does not have real interest on knowing what service is selling behind the ad. A click may also be known as invalid if it is generated through prohibited methods. These prohibited methods include but are not limited to: repeated manual clicks, or the use of robots, automated clicking tools, or other deceptive software.

Please be reminded that clicking on your own ads for any reason is prohibited, to avoid potential inflation of advertiser costs. All clicks must be generated as the result of a user clicking on the ads. In Adsense program policies, Google requires that webpages do not include incentives of any kind for users to click on ads. This includes encouraging users to click on the ads or to visit the advertisers' sites as well as labeling the ads with text other than "sponsored links" or "advertisements."

CPC and CPM ads

When will Google pay us? Why there are some clicks on my ads, but there are no earning? I am pretty sure that those are not invalid clicks, then how come? What is the difference between CPC ads and CPM ads? On what basis they will lead to earning for me? In this post, I am going to explain the difference between the two.

For CPC ad, you will get paid whenever there is a click on this kind of ad, provided that the click is valid. The CPC is the amount an advertiser pays each time a user clicks on his/her ad. In Google Adsense, most of the ads is CPC ads, and you will get paid when there is click on it. Most of them pay in a range from 0.01 to 2 dollars. You should be lucky when you recieve two dollar for a click. Nearly all of the contextual ads and a portion of image ads belong to this kind of advertisements.

For CPM ad, it means Cost Per 1000 Impression. Advertisers running CPM ads set their desired price per 1000 ads served. You will get paid whenever there are 1000 impressions for that CPM ad. CPM ads compete against pay-per-click (or CPC, cost per click) ads in Google's ad auction system, so only the highest performing ads will be served to your pages. Advertisers will need to bid a higher CPM than the existing CPC ads in order to show. Both image ads and text ads can be paid on CPM basis, and both of them are always site-targeted. CPM text ads will expand to take up the entire ad unit. One thing that you should always bear in mind is that, for CPM ads, your earnings are associated with impressions only, rather than clicks. Google pays you each time a CPM ad is shown on your page, rather than when a user clicks on the ad and views the advertiser's site.

So, you may wonder how you can check the earning performance of your CPM ads. Actually, the statistics (ad impression and clicks) of CPM ads will be shown together with that of CPC ads in general report in your account. Sometimes, you may notice that even though you've received impressions for CPM ads, you're not displaying any earnings. No worry. This is because an advertiser may pay as little as $0.50 for each 1000 impressions of an ad. With each impression worth $0.0005, you could receive up to 9 ad impressions for total revenue of $0.0045 without any clicks or earnings appearing in your report. So, you may afraid your earning will be lost when it cannot come to a significant figure. No worry. Although Google will only show earning that is more than one cent, all the earning from impressions of CPM ads that is below one cents will be recorded and accumulated. It will then show whenever it reaches one cent.

Since CPM ads are paid on the number of ad impression, the location of the CPM ads highly affect the overall earnings for you. For example, if you put your CPM ad on top of your site, you definitely recieve more ad impression for that and have higher income, and vice versa.

Although there is no offical figure to prove, there is a general belief that most of the image ads are paid on CPM basis, while only little text ads are paid on CPM basis. To be honest, from my experience, CPC ads perform a lot better than CPM ads. The only suitable place to put CPM ads is probably the forum site. It is because in a forum site, the usual and regular visitors already get used to the ads there. They tend to have a much lower CTR, and thus CPM ads (which are not paid on clicks) are the most effective to maximize your earning.

Today, anyone can choose to be an OpenID user or an OpenID Provider for free without having to register or be approved by any organization.

The OpenID Foundation was formed to assist the open source model by providing a legal entity to be the steward for the community by providing needed infrastructure and generally helping to promote and support expanded adoption of OpenID.

As Brad Fitzpatrick (the father of OpenID) said, “Nobody should own this. Nobody’s planning on making any money from this. The goal is to release every part of this under the most liberal licenses possible, so there’s no money or licensing or registering required to play. It benefits the community as a whole if something like this exists, and we’re all a part of the community.”

What is Adsense Channel / Advantages for a blogger with Channels?

After you logging into your Adsense account, you may wonder what a channel is for the first few times. I specifically write this post in order to let you know what is a channel, what is the use of it, how to maximize the potential of it. Stay tune!

There are two types of channels, one is URL channel, and the other is custom channel. There are some differences between two of them. But before going into that detail, I would like to explain more what is the function of it.

Channel can be assigned according to your preference during the generation of Adsense HMTL code. It is used to monitor the performance of an ad unit, or the set of ads units under a particular URL. As I have mentioned before in the previous posts, you need to adjust and fine-tune your ads (no matter their locations, the colors, the formats etc.), in order to get the maximizing performance of your Adsense ads. But how would you know how much does a particular ad unit earn per day?

By assigning a channel, you can closely monitor a particular ad, or a set of ads, and have the statistics of ads impressions, clicks and earnings. With these statistics, you can easily know which ads perform well, and should be kept. On the other hand, if an ad is underperformed (such as no clicks, low earnings etc.), then you need to make a change to it, or even eliminate it.

So, what is a URL channel? It is a channel that monitors all the ads units displaying under the URL you have provided. For example, if you choose the top domain "wwwthunderrocks.tk" as the URL of a URL channel, then the report of which will show the statistics about all ads units under the top domain of www.hkessay.com and also all its subdomains. On the other hand, if you choose a sub-domain the URL, then only the ads within the subdomains will be included in the report. However, personally, I do not think URL channel is useful. At least, it is less useful than custom channel.

What is a custom channel? A custom channel is assigned to a particular ad unit when you generate the Adsense HTML code. It can monitor that particular ad and show the statistics of its performance, impressions, clicks and earning. Since it is so specific, it is more popular and useful.

Also, one minor point to note, you can have up to 200 AdSense channels. You can use channels to gain the insight you need to optimize your site's performance. It's easy to add, deactivate, or rename your channels, and customized reports are simple to generate. Hope you find this post useful.

Explaining terms in Adsense

If you are new to Adsense, you may find some terms that are quite new to you. After logging into your Adsense Account, the default page should be your "report" page showing different statistics about your adsense site(s). In that table of statistics, there are three terms that you should know and familiar with. They are impression, Click Through Rate (CTR), and eCPM. Therefore, in this post, I am going to introduce these three terms to you, so you can have a better foundation in Adsense.

1. Impressions

Whenever a visitor comes to a site and land on a page, he/she recieves an impression. Impressions are the number of times your webpages with Adsense ads have been viewed. In fact, you can divide the big term "impression" into two specific areas: page impression and ad impression. You can increase impressions by increasing traffic (preferably targeted traffic) to your webpages. Some of the best ways to increase targeted traffic to your webpages include: -create more webpages, with relevant, focused content -create more links to your webpages -list your website/s under relevant categories in more directories -set up a directory of relevant sites on your website and accept relevant reciprocal links -write relevant articles, with your site information in the 'resource box' at the end of each article, and submit them to article directories

2. Clickthroughs

Clickthroughs, whihc are often known as CTR for short, are the percentage of viewers who click on your Adsense ads. You can increase Clickthroughs by increasing the relevance of Adsense ads on your site, and by tweaking the format and placing of your ads.

If every page on your site focuses tightly on the site topic, its more likely that the Adsense ads will too. For example, if every page of your site is about fishing, and the word 'fishing' appears several times on every page, its likely that your Adsense ads will relate to fishing. The best way to tweak your ad format and placement is to invest in an Adsense Tracker, and test, test, test! People who have done this tend to suggest that the best format is the large rectangle, with background and border the same color as the page behind it, so that the ad blends into the page. The best placement is towards the center or top left of the first screen of the page. Try these suggestions first, and then track and test, to be sure of what works best for your pages.

3. Effective CPM

Effective CPM is a measure of your average earnings, per thousand clicks. You can increase your Effective CPM by selecting topics that attract high bids from Adsense advertisers, and building pages and whole websites on higher paying topics. Although Google doesn't release information on Adsense bids, you can get a good idea of the top paying topics by looking at information on Adwords bids, or, for that matter, bids on pay-per-click search engines like Overture. There are a number of keyword research tools available, both free and paid, that can help you find high paying topics.

How to Copy and Paste the Adsense Code into your site

After getting approval from Google, here's come to your first step to earn money from it. What should one do in order to display Adsense ads on his/her sites? It is quite simple and straightforward. Adsense Ads are solely HTML code, just link those that make up a website. So, with the use of a simple HTML editor, you can easily paste such HMTL code into any place you want in your website.

First, you need to get the HMTL code for a specific product. There are various products from adsense. And I will not put too much emphasis here on that. After selecting the desired product, just pick up and copy the HTML code in the box at the bottom of the page.

Afterwards, you can use any simple HTML editors (e.g. Frontpage, Dreamweaver etc.) and paste the code to your desire position. According to Google, Once you've generated your ad code by visiting the AdSense Setup tab and following the steps to choose an ad type, format, and colors, you'll need to add the code to your web pages. In the final step of the setup, you'll see your code in the Your AdSense Code box. This is the code that you will cut-and-paste directly into your web pages.

Because every HTML editor is different, and because only you know how you like to build your web pages, we can't give exact instructions on copying the ad code into your pages. We can, however, give you a few tips:

- Make sure to paste the ad code into your source without making any changes to the code. This is important, as changing the code in any way can cause errors on your page (and is against the AdSense program policies)
- Copy the ad code between the body tags of your HTML
- If you're using a WYSIWYG editor (such as FrontPage or Dreamweaver) it's a good idea to paste the code into the Code or Source view. Pasting it into the layout view will often result in HTML tags being added to your code, and will result in errors
- If your page uses Frames, make sure that the code is pasted into the frame that contains your page's main content. We use this content to target ads

When you're all done, save your web pages and upload them to your server. If you have questions about uploading files to your server, we suggest contacting your web hosting company directly.

After pasting the code in your site, the ads will be shown immediately, no matter it is relevant ads, irrelevant one or the PSA (public service advertisement). Initially, the ads that you see may be Public Service Ads and won't be targeted to your page. We have to crawl your page's content before we know what kinds of ads to send your way - this can take up to a few hours, but usually occurs within minutes. Once our crawler has visited your page, you should see ads that are highly targeted to your content.

Introduction to Blog and Blogger

Blogger, a free blogging service now owed by Google, is a very popular. However, beginners are often faced with "how to" problems. This site will be a collection of "how to" tips. Some of the tips are also relevant to those using other blogging services. There are many posts here and you will not see all the tips on the main page.

To navigate around the site, type in the key words into the search boxes, check CATEGORIES at the top of the sidebar, refer to PREVIOUS POSTS or use the ARCHIVES. and find the relevant post. Regarding the search boxes, I would suggest you use both the Google sitesearch as well as the blogsearch at the top navbar as I have found that often, when one doesn't produce the results, the other one will. If you are at the archive page or an individual post page, to get back to the main (home) page click the blog title at the top of the page. If you want to search all the previous posts, the way to do it is to start with the main page, look at the previous posts there, then click the last post.
